Decked out in a flaming red fedora, matching silk shirt and a brown leather jacket, Gu is more appropriately dressed for his actual line of work: Observers have called it “match. Personal ads dangle from strings, sit atop open umbrellas, or are held aloft by parents standing still as statues. The marriage market runs for five hours each weekend afternoon, rain or shine. Gu earns a small commission for hanging up personal ads, but the real currency in the marketplace is the information placards themselves: If both parents find a pairing that seems like it may work, they swap contact information and try to set the kids up on a blind date. Success rates vary widely depending on whom you’re asking: Many parents say they’ve whiled away years with no results, while Gu and fellow matchmakers proclaim that entrusting them with a personal ad “almost always works.

Shanghai Marriage Market Video Walk into the famous People’s Park in People’s Square on Metro Line 2 — the heart of Shanghai City — on any weekend between 12 pm and 5 pm, and you will see something strange — a huge gathering of people which is the bustling Marriage Market. At first glance of this crowd, the author thought it to be some real-estate brokering day event of sorts, but realized this to be more on the lines of a marriage brokering weekly event where desperate parents and grandparents are milling about, looking for a mate for their unmarried offspring.
It may sound quite crude, but actually this is traditional and a regular activity for the middle aged and the elderly folks. China Highlights was curious to know more about what exactly goes on there. What Goes On We found that most of the folks there were anxious mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts and even grandparents looking for a good match for their sons and daughters of marriageable age which is open to debate.
We have to warn you that this section of the park can get very crowded at this time. But it is a one of a kind experience that fascinates you as you walk through scores of pamphlets snapshot biographies lining up the pathways and animated parents and grandparents involved in heated discussions and ‘brokering’ marriage deals, wondering what special qualities of the brides and grooms are being advertised.
We even spotted a fortune teller — possibly reading out the fates of some lucky fellow. People line up here, sitting on the ground with biographies stuck on umbrellas making it their private stalls , discussing futures of young people, who, in all probability, are not too happy with this arrangement. We didn’t really see any eager-to-be bride or groom and suspect the enthusiasm is fueled purely by the parents. The pamphlet biographies include details such as birthdays, height, weight, hobbies, job of the candidates and figures that seemed like monthly incomes of the candidates.

So far as I know, currently there are more than ten TV shows of the kind aired at the same time. Slightly different, most of the shows follow the basic procedures: The candidate will introduce himself with few clips of video and answer questions from the ladies on stage. During this introduction, the ladies press a button to turn off the light in front of them if they have no interest in the guy.
On each episode 5 or 6 candidates will be presented, so on average each candidate has around 20 minutes to get a date, if succeeds.

Dec 2, Trigger-king Love everything about this game, except for one detail. I genuinely enjoy competitive play, and this game is really enjoyable. I do not mind playing with people who are still learning in classic mode, it is actually fun to watch people get better over the course of a match. What bothers me is players who have really low credit scores due to going AFK. Now I occasionally play at work, and every so often I go afk for a minute or so.
It happens and in classic mode as long as an explanation is given no big deal. That being said, my credit score has never gone below 90, being perfect. I think it would really improve the community if people with lower than 80 credit scores could not play classic or ranked. Currently it is 60 and I feel that it should cut off higher. If you have lower than 80 as a credit score you have been reported quite a few times for negative habits that have impacted other players matches.
I just had a match in classic, practicing my Lapu-Lapu and two of my teammates went afk in the first 3 minutes. After losing the match I checked their credit scores and both were in the 75 range. Awesome, Fun and incredible! Oct 10, Cute but something wrong This game is so much fun.

Our online editor Mark Angus shares with us his experiences of living in Shanghai and how having a Chinese girlfriend enriched his life and enhanced his understanding of Chinese culture When I first moved to Shanghai in , It was never my intention to find myself a partner. However, that all changed rather quickly.
Anyone who has ever been badgered into doing something by a Shanghainese woman will appreciate the barrage I was under, and so unsurprisingly I acquiesced. Anyway, I really wanted to do my best to experience fully Chinese life, and dating seemed as good a way as any as doing this. Lila not her real name lived in Beijing, however. To cut a long story short, I went up to Beijing, Lila came down to Shanghai a couple of weeks later, and before long we had become a couple.
Lila worked for a US conglomerate in Beijing and I had just started my new job in Shanghai, so moving was not really an option for either of us. Having a Chinese girlfriend enriched my stay in China in so many ways. We travelled together throughout China often, and as well as going to the places one might expect, we also went off the beaten track a good deal. I know this would have been considerably more difficult without Lila by my side, handling the many frustrations that one encounters when trying to get about in China.
We ate out together — a lot! This was hugely entertaining, but more importantly it was through our many dining experiences that I came to understand the central part that food plays in Chinese culture.
